Subpart M — six feet, and the exceptions that confuse people.
Fall protection is perennially OSHA's most-cited standard. On a data center build it is also one of the easiest to get administratively right and operationally wrong.
Each employee on a walking/working surface with an unprotected side or edge which is 6 feet or more above a lower level shall be protected by guardrail systems, safety net systems, or personal fall arrest systems.
Construction triggers at 6 feet. General industry triggers at 4 feet (1910.28). On a campus with an operating building and an active build, a maintenance technician and a construction electrician on the same 5-foot platform are under different rules. Train both numbers.
§ Where the falls actually happen on a data center project
Roof work. Mechanical setting, membrane, penetrations, and edge work before permanent guarding exists.
Steel erection. Subpart R, with its own trigger at 15 feet (1926.760) and connector and deck exceptions.

Floor and roof openings — every slab penetration for conduit, busway and piping is a hole until it is covered and marked.

Ladders — Subpart X, and the most common informal violation on any site.

Slab penetrations covered with a piece of plywood that is not secured and not marked. Every one of those is a citation and, in a data hall under construction with poor lighting, a genuine hazard.
§ Training — 1926.503
- A competent person must train each employee who might be exposed to fall hazards.
- Training must cover the nature of the hazards, correct procedures for erecting, maintaining, disassembling and inspecting the systems in use, the use and operation of the systems, the role of each employee in a safety monitoring system, and the limitations of mechanical equipment.
- Written certification of training — employee name, date, and signature of the trainer or employer.
- Retraining where changes in the workplace, systems or equipment render prior training obsolete, or where an employee's behaviour indicates they have not retained it.
