A UPS exists to keep power on when everything else fails. That is exactly why isolating one is harder than isolating anything else in the building — it is designed to defeat the loss of a source.
Putting a UPS in maintenance bypass does not de-energize it. It energizes a path around the module while leaving the module input live and the DC bus charged. Bypass is an availability action, not a safety action.

§ Five sources, minimum
Rectifier / input feeder — from the upstream switchboard.
Output breaker — to the critical bus.
Static bypass — energized from the bypass source whether the module is running or not.
Maintenance bypass — closing it does not isolate the module input.
DC bus and battery string — stored energy present regardless of AC state. Capacitors on the DC bus hold charge after disconnection; allow the manufacturer discharge time and verify.

§ The bypass problem
The operational instinct is correct and the safety instinct is opposite. Operations wants the load carried, so bypass first. Safety wants the equipment dead, which bypass does not deliver.
A defensible procedure sequences both: transfer the load to bypass so the critical load is protected, then perform the full Article 120 isolation of the module — input, output, static bypass control power and DC — and verify at the point of work. Bypass is step one of the isolation, not the isolation.
§ Article 330 — power electronic equipment
- Covers the safety-related work practices for power electronic equipment: UPS, rectifiers, inverters, variable frequency drives and similar.
- Recognises that these systems have both AC and DC hazards, and stored energy that persists after the AC supply is removed.
- Read alongside Article 360 for the battery, and Article 320 for capacitors.
§ What goes wrong
A technician isolates the UPS input and output, sees the module dark, and opens it — with the DC bus still charged from the battery string. The battery cannot be switched off. It can only be isolated, and isolating it is itself Article 360 work.
- Assumed capacitor discharge. The manufacturer time is a minimum, not a guarantee. Verify.
- Control power fed from a different source than the module.
- Parallel modules — the output bus is common, and the other modules are still on it.
- Battery not in the procedure because the procedure was written for the AC side only.
