Generator yard.
The only major equipment in the building designed to start without a human deciding to start it. Everything about working there follows from that.
Before any work on or near a generator, its output gear, or anything it feeds — defeat the automatic start and verify it is defeated. A utility dip during your work will otherwise start the machine and close it onto the bus you are standing in front of.
§ Automatic operation
- Engine auto-start on utility loss or on a test schedule.
- Automatic transfer switches that will operate on their own logic.
- Automatic bus ties and paralleling schemes that close breakers on command.
- Remote start from the BMS or the NOC — which may be initiated by someone who does not know you are in the yard.
- Scheduled tests. Confirm the test schedule is suspended, not just that no test is running.
Auto-start defeated at the engine controller but the ATS left in automatic. The engine will not start, but the transfer switch will still operate on its own logic and change what is energized around you.
§ Electrical
- Paralleling switchgear — medium-voltage in many facilities, and a full switchgear room hazard profile in an outdoor enclosure.
- Generator output at 480 V or medium voltage, with the machine as a source in every isolation downstream. Map the sources →
- Battery and starting system — engine start batteries are a stored-energy source under Article 360, and their available short-circuit current is high.
- Block heaters and battery chargers — energized from a different source than the machine.
- Load bank connections — temporary cable, made and broken repeatedly, often in weather.

§ Noise — 1910.95
A generator yard under load bank test is among the loudest workplaces most data center staff will ever enter. Levels routinely exceed 100 dBA at the enclosure.
The obligations follow from exposure, not from the source: at an 85 dBA 8-hour TWA the employer must implement a hearing conservation program — monitoring, audiometric testing, hearing protection, training and recordkeeping. At 90 dBA TWA, feasible engineering or administrative controls are required.
Because generator testing is intermittent, sites frequently assume exposure is below the action level without ever measuring it. Measure it. A technician who spends two hours in the yard during a monthly load bank test may well be over.
§ Fuel systems
- Day tanks, bulk storage and transfer pumps — flammable and combustible liquids, OSHA Subpart H and NFPA 30.
- Fuel polishing systems — pumps, filters and pressurized lines.
