§ The risk profile
- Scale. Thousands of workers at peak, hundreds of pieces of mobile equipment, multiple simultaneous work fronts.
- Turnover. Crews rotate. Site-specific orientation is the only thing standing between a new arrival and an unfamiliar hazard.
- Schedule pressure. Data center construction schedules are aggressive and the penalty structures are real.
- Live adjacency. On expansion projects, energized equipment is on the other side of a wall.
§ The five that matter most
Temporary power — 1926.404(b)(1). GFCI or a properly documented assured equipment grounding conductor program. The highest-volume electrical finding in construction.
Fall protection — 1926.501. Six feet. Roof, leading edge, steel, openings, lifts.
Struck-by and mobile equipment — 1926.600. Site logistics on a greenfield campus with hundreds of machines is genuinely under-covered as a topic.
Critical lifts — generators, chillers and transformers, frequently near energized overhead lines.
Excavation — 1926.650. Duct bank and utility trenching is enormous in scope on greenfield sites, and the spoil pile is usually the problem.
- Also material: silica during coring and cutting (1926.1153), hot work adjacent to live space, confined space in construction (Subpart AA), and heat on outdoor work in West Texas, Louisiana, Georgia and Arizona summers.
