■ Certificates NFPA 70E 2027

Certificates and the retraining clock.

Retraining is required at intervals not to exceed three years — and sooner if any of several triggers fire. The certificate is the artifact that proves both the training and the date the clock started.

The clock

Three years is a ceiling, not a schedule. Most well-run programs retrain on a two-year cycle so that a slipped date never crosses the line, and run a short delta session whenever the standard revises.

§ The routine interval

Employees must be retrained at intervals not to exceed three years. The obligation sits with the employer under Article 105, and the record sits in the file under ' + m('105.3(A)') + '.

§ Triggers that require retraining sooner

01

Job or task change — the employee is assigned work the prior training did not cover.

02

New technology, equipment or procedure — new UPS topology, a new battery chemistry, a new switching procedure.

03

Audit finding — the employee work practices audit (110.3(L)(2)) shows the employee is not complying with the safety-related work practices.

04

Incident or near-miss involving the employee or the task.

§ What the certificate shows

Why the edition line matters now

A certificate that does not name an edition is ambiguous the moment the standard revises. With the 2027 edition in force, a record that simply says "NFPA 70E training" cannot tell an auditor whether the attendee learned the additional person requirement or the Chapter 3 renumbering.

§ When the standard revises

What this means in a data center

The three-year retraining interval and the three-year revision cycle are not synchronized — an employee trained in year one of an edition can be two editions stale by the time their clock runs out. In practice, run a short transition session when the edition changes and keep the routine cycle where it is.

For 2027 specifically, the delta is large enough to warrant it: the additional person requirement changes staffing, the Chapter 3 renumbering invalidates document citations, and the sub-50 V change contradicts language most programs still contain.

Book retraining or a 2027 delta session

Full 8- or 16-hour classes weekly, or a focused transition session for teams already trained on the prior edition.
